FIA F2 Championship, Sakhir, Sprint Race Report
In the Sprint Race, the two Team Trident drivers, Giuliano Alesi and Ralph Boschung fought hard among the midpack but the thermal degradation of their tires jeopardized the strategy of not coming back to the pits.
In the Sprint Race held at Sakhir, home of the opening round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship, the Team Trident racers could not make their way into the top-10. Ralph Boschung and Giuliano Alesi vigorously fought in the midpack and that led to a high tire degradation which compromised the strategy of not pitting set by the team. The second race saw teams choose between two strategies, with or without pit-stop and both turned out to be equally good as two of the top-3 did not stop. The key aspect for the Trident drivers was that they were in the middle of a hard-fighting pack which definitely took a toll on their tires. Alesi and Boschung thus did not have the chance to show the potential already expressed throughout the weekend. Rookie Giuliano Alesi set the sixth fastest lap of the race, confirming the good pace he had once in clean air. The drivers will now analyse the data collected on-track with their technical staff in anticipation of the upcoming round on the final weekend of April at Baku.
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager
“The dynamics of the race prevented our drivers from successfully completing the strategy we had chosen. The pace of our drivers at the end of the race was conditioned by the condition of the tires, which forced the French driver to pit in the closing stages. We have not been able to achieve results in line with our potential this weekend, but we hope to do so right from the Baku round.”
