Trident Motorsport secures positive fifth place with Richard Verschoor.
The FIA Formula 2 Championship started its 11th round of the season at the legendary Belgian facility with the running of the Sprint Race today in dry conditions. In qualifying, Richard Verschoor found decent chemistry with the venue and logged the seventh fastest lap time, while Calan Williams had to settle for P18. Verschoor had a swift start, jumping to third place, while Williams soon climbed up to P14.
During the sixth lap, at one-third of the distance, the Dutchman experienced a slight drop in terms of race pace and lost one position. On lap 11, an off-track exit by Sargeant caused a safety car situation and recompacted the pack. Williams took the opportunity to enter the pit lane and put on a fresh set of tires.
At the restart, Verschoor was quick again, but over the next few laps, he could not resist the attacks of Drugovich, who had a fresh set of tires as well. As a consequence, he finished the Sprint Race in P5.
Williams did not take advantage of the fresh tires, showing unexpected difficulties in overtaking, and finished in P16. In tomorrow's Feature Race, scheduled for 10:20 local time, hours before the Belgian F1 Grand Prix, Verschoor will start from P7 on the grid, while Williams will start from row 7.
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager, Sprint Race quote
"We are satisfied with the fifth place by Verschoor, as it carries on the top-ten streak he started in the previous round at the Hungaroring. Verschoor had a decent pace but was unable to defend P3, which he had gained in the early stages. As for Williams, we decided to pit him for a fresh set of tires while the race was under the safety car. Unfortunately, returning to the track, the Australian couldn't recover as we expected."
