In the closing race in the Principality, Bent Viscaal ended up close to the points zone with an 11th-place finish. On the other hand, Marino Sato ended a comeback race in P14. The balance for the Trident Motorsport drivers was conditioned by their starting positions, but race pace proved extremely solid. In the second sprint race, held on a wet track, both drivers showed a good pace but were involved in contacts.
The Feature that wrapped up the second round of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship was held today at the Monte Carlo street course, with Trident Motorsport drivers Bent Viscaal and Marino Sato showcasing a good performance level. Unfortunately, they did not make it to the points zone due to their position on the starting grid, on a circuit where it is extremely difficult to overtake. Viscaal, who started from P15 on the grid, kept a solid race pace, made no mistakes and was close to a points finish to eventually take P11. The result did not reflect the potential of the Dutch racer, who deserved to bring home some points at his first experience on the Monegasque city track. Viscaal started with Prime tyres and finished the race with the Option. In the final race, Marino Sato was certainly positive too, having an opposite race strategy to that of his teammate, and yet equally profitable. In line with the simulations of the team's technical staff, the different strategies were equivalent. The driver from Japan, a Monte Carlo rookie as well as his teammate, gained four positions compared to qualifying and finished the Feature Race in P14. Sato made an additional tire change to hunt for the fastest lap, which he barely missed.
In Sprint Race 2, held in the early hours of the morning, the rain that fell overnight made the track surface very slippery and that led to several off-track exits and the Trident drivers were not exempt. Viscaal, who finished the race in P12, made contact with another car and that led to a ten-second penalty in the race classification. Sato was hampered by contact during the very early stages, with damage that affected his race pace.
The teams of the FIA Formula 2 Championship will now begin the preparatory work for the next round of the season, scheduled for the first weekend of June on the Baku city track, which has very different characteristics and is extremely fast compared to Monte Carlo. For Trident Motorsport and its drivers, both making their debut in Azerbaijan, the coming event will need full commitment.
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager, Sprint Race 2 quote:
“Sprint Race 2 was the first wet race of the season. Our drivers had no experience, but their race pace wasn't bad at all. Both had a good start, but their position on the grid penalized them on a track where it is extremely hard to overtake. Sato damaged his car in the very early stages, while Viscaal put up a convincing pace."
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager, Feature Race quote:
“Our drivers had opposite strategies in the feature race. Viscaal started with the Prime tyres, while Sato chose the Option compound. In the end, the two choices turned out to be equivalent and in line with our projections. The Dutchman made a good comeback and Sato was very convincing. We made a second tire change with the Japanese racer to look for the fastest lap in the race, which we just missed. Sato's pace in the final run was remarkable. Now we aim to return to the points in Baku!”
