The first FIA F3 win for David Schumacher and a third place for Jack Doohan highlighted the first race day of the Styrian weekend, a highly positive one for Trident Motorsport. As a result, the Italian Squad solidified the second position in points. Clément Novalak was involved in contact while fighting for the win in Race 1.
The FIA Formula 3 Championship went underway at the scenic venue of Spielberg for the third round of the 2021 season. The track, located in the green region of Styria, saw teams and drivers line up for the first two races of the weekend. The final one for the event is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:05, only a few hours before the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Austria. In qualifying, which featured really close performance between drivers and 24 cars covered by one second, Trident Motorsport took sixth place with Novalak, just 0.103s away from the pole, seventh place with Doohan, and 14th place with Schumacher. In the opening race, Novalak was off to a good start from the third row and moved to P3 early. After taking the lead, the Aix-en-Provence native made contact with another driver and was forced to retire. The Frenchman was later penalized three positions on the starting grid for Race 2. Jack Doohan had a better balance for the day. In race 1, he took third place despite dealing with a damaged bottom on his car due to contact in the early stages. Schumacher, on the other hand, was pushed off the track at the beginning of the race and was unable to express his full potential. The German second-generation racer finished in P12 managing the damage occurred to his car in the incident. After taking off from the top of the starting grid in race 2, Schumacher drove away to an authoritative win. It was a dominating performance for him, and his gap was more than three seconds to the closest rival. He performed like a veteran in the restarts and in the key phases of the race. This is an absolutely unusual winning margin for a championship as competitive as Formula 3. Doohan confirmed his qualifying result with P7. The winner of Race 3 at Le Castellet secured second place in the championship ranking. Novalak finished race 2 P13 position at the end of an aggressive comeback. Now Trident Motorsport, standing second in the team championship, and its three drivers will analyze the data collected today in the usual preparation work for Race 3, the final one for F3 this weekend.
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager, Race 1:
“We are delighted for Jack's podium, which came at the end of a very challenging run. Our driver damaged the bottom of his car in the first phase of the race and was unable to compete in Race 1 in optimal conditions. Doohan defended himself very well and got the maximum he could. We are sad about how the race ended for Novalak. Without contact with an opponent, he could have claimed victory. Schumacher was sent off the track by another driver and was unable to express his potential. However, he finished with a favourable P12 that allowed him to start from the top of the grid in Race 2."
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager, Race 2.
“We are extremely happy for David's first victory in the series, coming at the end of a simply perfect run. Even in the restarts, and in the trickiest moments of the race, Schumacher did not have the slightest hesitation. Novalak had a solid comeback, starting from the back of the pack, while Doohan was consistent in his pace. He holds second place in the championship standings."
