A Spielberg reboot
This weekend's FIA Formula 2 Championship event at Red Bull Ring offers Trident Motorsport the opportunity to get back into motion coming from last week's round, held in Catalunya, where the team did not score any points. The Styrian circuit will host round 7 of a championship that has not yet had a dominator but has seen ten different winners in the first twelve races held.
Trident Motorsport has a win under its belt and will land on Austrian soil aiming for a competitive weekend, starting from qualifying, which is key for the progress of the entire round in a very compact leading group. In the previous round in Spain, a tough qualifying session relegated the Trident Motorsport drivers to the back of the starting grid, with little chance of moving up, in a category where the gaps are always tiny.
Richard Verschoor has a good tradition on the Spielberg track, having achieved the most recent of his three FIA F2 wins there in 2023. Since the start of the season, the 23-year-old Dutchman has not yet achieved results in line with his and the team's potential. He is now expected to make a turning point in a season where a very positive weekend is often enough to take a massive step forward in points, considering the leveled competition.
Last season, Roman Staněk achieved his best result of the year at Red Bull Ring, a fifth place in the Sprint Race. The 20-year-old Czech, who won the Sprint Race in Melbourne this year, is looking to improve his score, which has been still since Monte Carlo, and deliver a competitive weekend to allow, together with his Dutch teammate, further gains for Trident Motorsport in the Team Championship.
Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager: “We are coming off a weekend where we were unable to perform well in qualifying, negatively impacting the outcome of the entire event. The Red Bull Ring is a very different circuit to last weekend: there are low and medium-speed sections, linked by straights and three hard braking zones. The kerbs are high. The drivers and technical staff will have to deal with a different challenge and a very open outcome. The results will depend on the quality of our work: the competition is fierce, and we will have to give our best to achieve our goal".
The FIA Formula 2 Championship will start on Friday at 10.05 with a 45-minute free practice session. Qualifying will be on the same day, starting at 14.55. The Sprint Race will go underway on Saturday at 13.30. The Feature Race, which will conclude the weekend, will start on Sunday at 10:00. The activity on the track will be fully broadcast live by the Sky Sports F1 network.
