James Wharton with Trident Motorsport in the 2027 FIA F2 Championship
Trident Motorsport is pleased to announce the first of two drivers who will make up its 2027 FIA Formula 2 Championship lineup. The Milan-based team, headquartered in Ossona, will field the promising James Wharton next season. This will be the 20-year-old Australian's first full season in the junior series, having already made his debut with Trident Motorsport at the finale of the 2025 championship, taking part in the Lusail round.
Born in Melbourne on July 8, 2006, Wharton began his karting career in Australia, later moving to Europe to continue his racing career. He made the transition to single-seaters in 2022, a season in which he competed in the UAE, Italian, and ADAC Formula 4 championships, immediately making a name for himself. In 2023, the Australian won the UAE Formula 4 title, adding second place in the Euro 4 Championship and fourth in the Italian Formula 4.
2024 marked another important step in Wharton's growth. After finishing sixth in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, the Australian driver finished runner-up in the Formula Regional European Championship with four wins, four pole positions, and ten podiums. That same year, he also made his debut in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
In 2025, Wharton embarked on his first full season in the F3 championship series, taking victory in the Spielberg Sprint Race and finishing eighteenth overall. At the end of the year, he made his debut in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Trident Motorsport, an opportunity that allowed the Australian driver to begin working with the team in preparation for a possible future in the category.
This year, Wharton continued his experience in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The Australian driver delivered a strong performance throughout the Formula 3 campaign, achieving several notable results, including victory in the Barcelona Sprint Race and a second-place finish in the Madrid Sprint Race during the final round of the F3 season.
