John Bennett just out of the points
The Feature Race, which closed out the seventh round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship season, held at the historic Silverstone circuit, saw Trident Motorsport narrowly miss out on the points. A below-expected qualifying performance certainly affected the English weekend for the Milan-based team with its headquarters in Ossona.
With two drivers forced to start in the back half of the grid, the Trident Motorsport team decided to diversify their car strategies during the Feature Race.
John Bennett started from eighteenth on the grid on Prime tyres. Conversely, Laurens Van Hoepen, who started from twentieth on the grid, started on the Option tyres.
After a strong start, where he managed to gain a few positions using the softer tyres, the 20-year-old Dutchman immediately pitted to tackle the rest of the race on the harder compounds.
The race, without any neutralizations, left Van Hoepen with no chance of recovery, and he finished the longer race of the British weekend in seventeenth place.
Conversely, John Bennett took advantage of the Prime tyres to climb the standings, reaching seventh place before the mandatory pit stop. Returning to the track on lap 23 on the Option tyres, the 22-year-old Briton attempted to climb the standings. However, the home driver lacked the final push to secure the points and finished his home race in eleventh place.
The FIA Formula 2 Championship cars will rev up their engines again in two weeks, when the junior series takes place at the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
Giacomo Ricci: “We cannot be satisfied with today's performance. Qualifying determined the outcome of our weekend on British soil. We diversified our drivers' strategies in the Feature Race. John Bennett mounted a good comeback, finishing just outside the points. Laurens Van Hoepen spent too much time at the back of the pack. Now, our attention is already turned to the next round at Spa-Francorchamps, where we aim to have a competitive weekend.”
