Miami, engines to roar again under the Florida sun

Miami, engines to roar again under the Florida sun

The engines are finally revving. After a nearly two-month hiatus, the FIA Formula 2 Championship cars will return to action next weekend at the Miami Gardens circuit. The championship's first trip to North America will be a first-ever. The scenic semi-permanent Florida venue will open a double-header overseas, concluding in Montreal, Canada, on May 24th.

Trident Motorsport enters the second round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship season aiming to build on its promising debut in Melbourne. On the Australian track, the opening round of the 2026 season, the Milan-based team, headquartered in Ossona, achieved a podium finish in the Feature Race with Laurens Van Hoepen.

The 20-year-old Dutchman also scored points in the Sprint Race, finishing the Australian round in second place in the overall FIA Formula 2 Championship standings. With this performance, Van Hoepen arrives in Miami just eight points behind the championship leader.

Although he failed to score points in the two Melbourne races, John Bennett also performed at a competitive level. The 22-year-old Englishman from Salisbury immediately found the right chemistry with the Trident Motorsport team. However, a less impressive qualifying performance than his teammate impacted his final result.

At 5.412 kilometers, the circuit that runs next to the Miami Dolphins stadium is an unknown quantity for both F.2 teams and drivers. Its layout, which alternates long straights with more flowing sections, presents an interesting challenge for the Italian team.

Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager of Trident Motorsport: “We're ready to tackle the second round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship on the Miami street circuit. The Florida track is new to all of us. After the good results achieved in Melbourne, we've done intense preparation work to be at our best in Miami. Now we'll give it our all to have a competitive weekend and continue the positive streak that began in Australia.”

The engines of the FIA Formula 2 Championship cars will start on Friday at 9:30 a.m., with the 45-minute free practice session. Qualifying is scheduled for the same day at 2:30 p.m. The Sprint Race will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Feature Race, which will conclude the weekend, will start on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. All track activity will be broadcast live on Sky Sport F1. All times are in local time (GMT -4).
