Out of the points at the end of a difficult race in the wet

The Feature Race that closed out the ninth round of the FIA Formula 2 Championship season, held at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, did not bring any points to Trident Mtotorsport. Rain, which fell before and during the race, left Sami Meguetounif and Max Esterson struggling with extremely critical conditions, including poor visibility and precarious grip.

A challenging qualifying session for both drivers of the Ossona-based team saw Max Estersonstart from seventeenth on the grid, two places ahead of Sami Meguetounif. The 21-year-old from Marseille was the fastest when the lights went out, moving up several positions.

The pit crew then opted to pit early on lap seven, allowing Meguetounif to take advantage of fresher tires in order to attempt to climb through the standings. Unfortunately, a heavier downpour in the second half of the race thwarted the Frenchman's hopes, and he crossed the finish line in sixteenth place.

Max Esterson, on the other hand, opted for a different strategy. Having lost a few positions at the start, the twenty-two-year-old American gritted his teeth to pit at the end of lap twelve, just as the rain began to intensify. This allowed him to make up ground and cross the finish line in seventeenth place, right behind his teammate Meguetounif.

As a disappointing weekend in Belgium winds up, Trident Motorsport’s sight is on next week, when the FIA Formula 2 Championship will compete in Hungary, at the Hungaroring, in the outskirts of Budapest.

Giacomo Ricci, Team Manager: “On a wet track, it's difficult to recover when you start far back on the grid. We tried different strategies for our drivers, but neither managed to secure points. A late recovery attempt was thwarted by the entry of the Safety Car, behind which the Feature Race ended.”
