Trident takes fourth in a race interrupted in early stages
The FIA Formula 3 Championship kicked off at one of its most prestigious venues, Melbourne's Albert Park, which hosted the series' season-opener for the second consecutive year. In the first qualifying session, the Trident Motorsport drivers stood out. Freddie Slater, third-fastest, was the team's best performer, finishing ahead of Noah Strømsted in tenth. Having gone off the track after making a mistake, Matteo De Palo had his best lap cancelled, forcing him to start from the back of the grid for both races.
Due to the inverted top twelve qualifying positions on the Sprint Race starting grid, Strømstedand Slater started the Sprint Race from third and tenth, respectively, with De Palo forced to start from the back of the grid.
At the kick-off, Strømsted attempted to avoid contact but was overtaken by a rival at the first braking point. The 18-year-old from Copenhagen immediately attempted to regain position, but was forced to give up. Dropping to fourth place, the Trident Motorsport driver maintained the pace of the leader, attempting to join the fight at the front.
Slater was also forced to give up positions when the lights went off. Caught up in traffic, the 17-year-old Englishman slipped to twelfth. The Audi Junior driver then rolled up his sleeves and reclaimed tenth place.
However, as the Trident Motorsport drivers were about to counterattack, the red flag was displayed following an accident on lap eight, effectively ending the Sprint Race prematurely. As per the rules, the race officials therefore awarded half points only to the top five finishers.
Forced to start from the back of the grid, De Palo tried to avoid contact at the first corner. Having become familiar with the car and the semi-permanent Albert Park track, the Roman driver then began to move up through the order. De Palo finished the halved Sprint Race in twenty-sixth place.
Now, the Trident Motorsport drivers will analyze today's events with the technical staff in the usual preparation work for the Feature Race, scheduled for tomorrow at 8:50 a.m. local time (GMT +10), which will conclude the first round of the FIA Formula 3 Championship season at the Melbourne circuit.
Giacomo Ricci: “A Sprint Race reduced to just seven laps prevented the drivers from showing their potential. Noah Strømsted and Freddie Slater were careful not to take too many risks at the start, but the red flag prevented them from displaying more. Matteo De Palo's exit in qualifying forced him to start last, but there was potential to make up positions. Now we need to fully concentrate on preparing for tomorrow's Feature Race, the main race of the weekend.”
